The best HRIS for an hourly workforce connects employee records to time, attendance, schedules, manager approvals, payroll, and reporting without hiding the source. UKG Ready, Paycor, and ADP Workforce Now offer configured suite, payroll-centered workforce, and payroll-and-service paths. The buyer should follow a difficult timecard rather than compare ordinary dashboards.

Map the source-time-to-payroll chain

Identify who owns job, location, authorized rate, schedule, worked time, manager edits, approvals, time locks, payroll release, and department reporting. Define which value is authoritative when time and payroll both permit an edit. A correction should preserve the original, approver, effective date, transfer evidence, and final result.

UKG Ready may fit when HR, time, and payroll require one configured operating chain. Paycor may fit when structured manager and workforce workflows are central. ADP Workforce Now may fit when payroll-centered modules, implementation, and a documented service route provide the better model.

Ask which time, scheduling, payroll, reporting, or service scope is included. A suite diagram does not establish the configured rule or customer responsibility.

Scenario: a supervisor transfer leaves pending time

An hourly employee records an overnight shift and reports a missed punch. Before the timecard is approved, HR transfers the employee to another supervisor and department. Payroll approaches cutoff while both supervisors can see part of the history.

UKG Ready may fit if pending approval follows the employee and the time chain stays visible. Paycor may fit if structured roles and workforce records give HR clearer control. ADP Workforce Now may fit if the configured modules and service escalation make the exception easier to own.

The buyer should also change the work location after time entry. This exposes whether payroll, reporting, and policy fields follow an approved effective date or merely the latest employee profile value.

Run an hourly-exception evaluation

Use fictional employees and supervisors:

  1. Configure manager, HR, time administrator, payroll, finance, employee, and backup roles.
  2. Enter regular time, a missed punch, an overnight shift, and a manager edit.
  3. Transfer the employee before approval and inspect pending work and access.
  4. Lock time, attempt a late correction, and document reopening.
  5. Reconcile source time, payroll result, employee record, and department report.
  6. Export time history, approvals, roles, reports, cases, and logs.

This publication has not performed the test. Buyers can reproduce it and score time ownership, role behavior, correction recovery, service, migration, and exports.

Edge case: a transferred timecard remains wrong

The timecard transfers successfully, but the underlying rate, location, policy, break treatment, or overtime input is wrong. The FLSA and applicable state requirements depend on employer facts and current law. HRIS, time, scheduling, payroll, and filing features do not prove compliance.

Similarly, storing records does not establish EEOC retention compliance. Qualified owners must define the policy first and validate the configured workflow and export.

Hourly-workforce criteria and final verdict

Choose UKG Ready when the configured time-to-HR-to-payroll chain is clearest. Choose Paycor when payroll-centered workforce roles align with managers. Choose ADP Workforce Now when implementation and the service ecosystem provide better exception ownership.

Compare employee-field authority, time source, approvals, locks, effective dates, payroll handoffs, reports, implementation, service, corrections, logs, exports, and exit. The strongest system makes a late time change visible before it becomes unexplained pay.

Require a backup administrator to reconstruct the entire exception from exported evidence. If the answer depends on the original supervisor's memory, the workflow is not ready.

Document the accepted time-chain fields and report definitions beside the administrator procedure. Revalidate them after any supervisor, location, time-policy, module, or payroll-boundary change.
